In 1924, Arthur Rawdon Spinney, a British army officer stationed in Alexandria, Egypt, identified a need in the area for imported food products, planting the seed for what would later be one of the Middle East’s leading supermarket chains.
Spinneys’ Dubai story started in 1961, with our first supermarket opening in Al Nasr Square in 1962. At that time, it was known locally as ‘The Frozen Chicken’ – the only retailer to sell frozen chickens from a chiller van. Such innovation has remained. Spinneys enjoys a well-deserved reputation for forward-thinking, keeping pace with changes in cooking trends and the emergence of new products worldwide.
Today, Spinneys Dubai, owned by UAE national Mr Ali Albwardy, has built a strong name for supplying top quality produce and offering a high level of customer service. Yet food standards, safety and freshness have always been at the forefront of the company’s ethos – just one reason why the Spinneys brand is defined as ‘The fresher experience’.
In order to maintain customer satisfaction, Spinneys constantly monitors shopping trends and reacts quickly and effectively to customer suggestions and feedback. With in-store bakeries, butcheries and delicatessens, we’re able to deliver not only on the promise of freshness, but variety too.
As well as supporting local food producers within the UAE, we have also developed an enviably comprehensive network of reputable suppliers around the world. These suppliers – our producers – help us to provide you with the freshest international products on the shelves every day.
Our in-store system is committed to ensuring a hygienic, controlled and safe environment in which every department is well-presented and welcoming with knowledgeable, friendly staff on hand to make your food shopping experience as easy and enjoyable as possible.
The importance of sustainable sourcing in today's age of depleting resources has never been so critical. As a leading retailer in the region, we have the responsibility to bring food to our customers without affecting future generations. We work with our growers around the world to bring you sustainable fruits and vegetables. Join the Spinneys team on our journey towards a better future.
GLOBALG.A.P. is an internationally recognised set of farm standards dedicated to Good Agricultural Practices (G.A.P.), which ensure safe and sustainable agricultural production, that benefit farmers, retailers and consumers throughout the world.
An assurance of our commitment to sustainable sourcing, Spinneys is the first retail member of GLOBALG.A.P. in the Middle East.
At Spinneys, food safety and traceability is of paramount importance to us. We ensure full traceability of all our produce from our growers' farms to your table. We encourage our growers to employ natural pest control methods where possible. Where other methods are required to reduce the impact of pests and diseases on crops, only controlled amounts of safe, approved pesticides are used.
Conservation of water, soil and ecosystems is essential for our future generations. Our growers are committed to preserving our natural resources using techniques such as drip irrigation for water conservation and crop rotation for soil health.
We are committed to improving the working conditions for the people who grow our crops around the world. From safeguarding our growers from pesticide risks to providing them with protective equipment and helping them enjoy better living and working conditions, it is our pledge to care about their health, safety and welfare.
We ensure our growers are paid a fair price for their crops to help them maintain sustainable farming practices and drive worker welfare. You can help them by shopping with a sustainable retailer like Spinneys.
We guarantee that our fresh produce is not genetically modified. This commitment helps us to assure biodiversity for future generations.
Sourcing from organic farms is one way to help preserve the planet's natural resources and assure fresh produce for you. Organic production relies on techniques such as crop rotation and biological pest control. At Spinneys, we have a wide range of organic options for you.
We have selected a group of growers who follow sustainable farming to form the Spinneys Farmer's Club, UAE. They harvest and deliver their fresh produce within 24 hours with minimal travel. This helps us reduce carbon footprints by reducing food mileage and bring you fresher fruits and vegetables.
Let's aim towards a better tomorrow by making meaningful choices today with what we buy and consume. Choices that help to conserve natural resources, promote fair trade practices and do more good for this world. Support sustainable sourcing. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE.
