There’s a reason for the saying ‘cool as a cucumber’ – this fruit is the king of refreshing. It’s also low in calories and high in essential nutrients, which makes it a winner in everything from salads and summer drinks to pickles and chilled soup. But its uses don’t end with the edible - there is a surprisingly high number of ways the humble cucumber can come to the rescue. Next time you pick one up, consider the fact that:
- Chilled cucumber slices placed over tired eyes work wonders – the combination of vitamin C, caffeic acid and antioxidants soothe irritation and reduce puffiness.
- It’s also pretty handy for when you’re out of breath mints. Suck on a slice (seriously) after your next meal – its high water content keeps bad breath at bay.
- Move aside Olivia Pope, there’s a new fixer in town – at least where your pen(cil)manship is concerned. Without peeling, use the rubbery skin to smooth out errors made in pencil and crayon. The green way to keep things clean indeed.
- Use it instead of cold, hard cash. Well, on #DXBCucumberDay at least.
