This past weekend saw the first build-up ride of the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge. Hundreds of cyclists of varying levels of experience, age and fitness braved the humidity (and the early hour) on 2 September – and what an introduction to the 2016 event it was.
But it wasn’t all about exertion and fitness. There was a distinctly festive feel: wooden tables and chairs dotted the grass, the sound of music wound its way around banana stands, Vita Coco handed out chilled coconut water, Revolution Cycles were there for bike support and the smooth mover stationary bikes – where the athletes mustered the last of their energy to make their own smoothies – kept the crowd cheering. In the corner, the Spinneys chefs worked hard in a newly acquired food truck, handing out much-deserved cheese omelettes for those who’d just completed the first of many rides.
The air was festive, with the event creating a great sense of community and camaraderie.“It’s a nice change,” said Sunil Kumar (56). “Last year was great, but everybody left after the race was done.” He’s been taking part in the Cycle Challenge for three years now, and got into the sport in order to conquer those 92km coming up in December. His son, Manav, is 15 and a first-timer – they decided it was time to do the race together.
As the rest of Dubai started waking up, these proud few made their way back home with 35km of cycle track behind them – and the second build-up ride to look forward to.
