Paul is Spinneys’ category manager for fruit and vegetables. Here he tells us why he’s excited about pears and citrus fruits, both right in season.
August, the start of the pear growing season, is one of my favourite times of year. Our conference pears (in stores now) come from the Netherlands and the UK, where the fruit is available nearly all year round. Pears become even softer and sweeter after they’ve been picked, which is why at Spinneys we get ours at the ready-to-eat stage.

The citrus season in the Northern Hemisphere begins around October. Our growers in Spain and Morocco are always developing new varieties just for us, and they have some excellent seedless, soft, easy-peel citrus fruits. I especially love clementines – we like to offer ones with the leaves still on, as this is a great indicator of freshness. All our citrus fruit is packed and shipped to our stores within a couple of days of being picked.
