Intricate cakes look stunning but can be a challenge for novice bakers. So, it’s best to keep things simple with a classic recipe. It’s hard to go wrong with crowd pleasers such as a Victoria sponge or loaf cake – for the perfect result worthy of Mother’s Day, remember to follow your recipe carefully, as cake-making is a precise art.
Instead of baking one large cake, you might find it easier to rustle up a batch of smaller treats such as chocolate brownies, flapjacks, shortbread, muffins or cupcakes. To give your bakes the special treatment for Mother’s Day, dust them with icing sugar and present on a pretty cake stand, ready for your mum to tuck in.
