Spirits are high, the decorations are going up and we’re feeling inspired to get artistic this ho-ho-ho holiday season with lots of easy ideas that can be made at home. Here, we let you in on some of our favourites – ’tis the season to share after all.
Gifts in a jar
For a simple yet thoughtful idea, try your hand at an edible, bespoke jar. Layer the ingredients for a granola recipe, a cookie dough mix, some spiced couscous or all-purpose seasoning. Or if you want a relaxing treat, try this yogurt, honey and almond face mask – ideal to unwind with after a busy day of celebrations. Finish with a gift card or tag for the ultimate personalised present.
While you can find tonnes of fun embellishments in store, you can also create your own with some stained-glass window biscuits. Just stamp out a few festive shapes (Wilton’s cookie cutters are perfect) from a batch of homemade cookie dough, make a hole or pattern in the centre (like a star or a heart), fill with a coloured sweet (Waitrose Clear Fruits) and bake as usual. But if you’d rather opt for garlands of the non-edible variety, these white-as-snow decorations are cute, inventive and only call for cornflour and bicarb.
Place name cards
Save guests from any confusion of finding their seat at the table by creating some original pine tree place cards. And as the cards only take 30 minutes to make, they can be designed on Christmas Eve as a little warm-up for the big day.
A tasty centrepiece
Assemble a towering after-dinner masterpiece by layering cream-textured cheese studded with chunks of papaya on top of rounds of Winston’s handmade strong cheddar and Chaource goats’ cheese on a board with rosemary. Serve with our artisan sourdough freshly baked bread. For a showstopper that has a sweeter note, melt Green & Black’s Organic Milk Chocolate and pair with strips of panettone, dried fruit and zesty clementines for dipping.
A lasting present
If you’re hosting this year, why not give your guests a parting present for them to enjoy at home? This authentic, custom-made chai tea is a lovely way to help them settle in for the evening and spot on if you’re looking to score some brownie points.
