Visiting producers around the world is one of the most crucial things we do. It’s a key step we take to ensure the highest standards are met for consistency, quality and sustainability. Much of our fresh produce – including greens, herbs and flowers – comes from a trio of suppliers located within a 200km radius of Nairobi; logistically, this location is ideal and means the produce takes just 48 hours to get from soil to Spinneys. Here, we look at what Paul found on his trip to the farms...
Husband and wife team Farah and Ariff Shamji owns AAA, supplier of our private label range of herbs, as well as chillies, roses and other flowers. We know we can depend on the company to provide us with the quality we look for: it has certification from Global GAP – only given to producers whose sustainable measures reach the top – while all of AAA’s farms have on-site packaging facilities, which ensures your produce is picked and packed fast. All this despite the isolated location causing the company to tackle issues such as severe droughts and elephants trampling over crops.
We’ve been working with Sunripe for over 10 years. Tiku, a second-generation farmer from Nairobi, is in charge of the company and supplies us with organic vegetables for the spinneysFOOD range. We’re currently working together on a new project that will provide you with a year-round supply of fresh organic mint, coriander and parsley.
KENYA HORTICULTURAL EXPORTERS
One of Kenya’s most established growers for the UAE market, KHE, run by Harish Patel and his son Shamal, supplies the vegetables for our convenient range of prepared and stir-fry packs. The company works hard to develop its growing practices, including ways to monitor and perfect water requirements. As well as this, the packaging is designed to manage the flow of carbon dioxide and oxygen, keeping produce fresh for longer.
